Every August South Africans across the country celebrate Women’s Month, to commemorate the strength and resilience of the women who stood up for their rights during the great women’s march of 9 August 1956. In the United States, 26 August is also known as Women’s Equality Day, as it was on this day that women were granted the right to vote.
Today we still acknowledge and recognise the hard work and determination of our mothers, sisters, friends and daughters. And with this in mind, The Roundhouse decided to honour two of our country’s best female winemakers with a special food and wine pairing menu.
Between 8 – 13 August a selection of our courses will be paired with wines by winemaker Elize Coetzee and cellarmaster Andrea Freeborough.
Coetzee, a winemaker at Zonnebloem cellars in Stellenbosch, has been in charge of the white wine team at the estate since 2010. Her Zonnebloem Chardonnay 2015 will be paired with our Salt Baked Celery Root, featuring Trompette De La Mort, Burnt Onion, Nasturtium and a Goats Butter Noisette. The chardonnay has an elegant minerality with subtle vanilla oak spice and a refreshing lime aftertaste to offset the saltiness of the dish.
Our second course, a Neck of Lamb, braised in herbs and served with Couscous, Fermented Turnip, Parsley and Anchovy Paste and Lamb Jus, will be paired with the Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon 2012. Cellarmaster Andrea Freeborough’s Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon is known for its ripe black and red fruits, tannic structure and herbaceous notes that tend to brighten up the already rich flavoured braised lamb neck.
